SUSANVILLE >> The death of the Carmel Valley man who died Sunday while incarcerated in a maximum-security prison cell in Susanville has been ruled a suicide, a prison spokeswoman said.

Enough physical evidence was found in his cell at the California Correctional Center to determine John Collard, 56, had committed suicide, Department of Corrections spokeswoman Chrissy Hackler said.

A medical examiner has yet to release the exact cause of death, Hackler said.

Collard had escaped from a Santa Cruz Ben Lomond Conservation Camp on Sept. 2. Two days later he was captured at a bar/restaurant on Cannery Row.

Officials believed he had escaped to go see his family in Monterey or Carmel Valley.
