| Work Program Trains Inmates for Life Beyond Bars |

ANAMOSA, Iowa - More of Iowa’s former inmates are staying out of trouble after being released from prison. According to the Iowa Department of Corrections, the number of people who reoffend is now below 30 percent, the lowest in recorded history. The department offers a number of programs to help rehabilitate offenders so they don’t come back, including a work training program called Iowa Prison Industries. It’s giving offenders the skills they need to find jobs when they get out. Behind the walls of the Anamosa State Penitentiary, offenders make everything from license plates to classroom desks. James Miller has worked in Iowa Prison Industries’ custom wood shop for three years. When he walked in on day one he didn’t know anything about furniture making, now he’s a team lead. ”I knew nothing about this. The guy who was the lead before me, he was amazing. He took me under his wing, was very patient. Now I feel like I’m competent enough to go out in the world and be a productive member of society based on the skills I acquired at IPI,” Miller said.
