West Virginia prisoners can now earn theology degrees

Patterned after a similar program at the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola, West Virginia prisoners can now apply to Appalachian Bible College and work toward and earn a degree in Bible and Theology.

Commissioner of Corrections Jim Rubenstein said he has faith the new program will have a positive effect on those incarcerated in the Mountain State, just as it has at Angola.

Rubenstein visited the once-notorious Louisiana prison last month. He told a legislative committee this week that seminary classes at Angola had reduced prisoner on prisoner violence “to zero.”

Angola, considered the nation’s largest maximum-security prison facility with 6,300 inmates, was once considered among the most violent prisons in the United States. It has been nicknamed the “Alcatraz of the South,” along with “The Farm,” an apparent reference to the 18,000-acre site’s origins. The site of the prison, which opened in 1901, at one time consisted of four large plantations along the Mississippi River.
