Population of Inmates in United States Increases

Breaking three consecutive years of decline, the number of people in state and federal prisons climbed slightly in 2013, according to a report released by the United States Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Statistics.

The prison population last year was reported to be close to 1.6 million, an increase of about 4,300 over the previous year, but below its high of 1,615,487 in 2009, according to the document made public on Tuesday.

The U.S. incarcerates more people per capita than any other nation in the world, which is approximately one in 100 adults or more than 2.2 million people, according to the Pew Center on the States.
