Inmate pleads not guilty in prison icehouse slaying

A prison inmate who disappeared for days inside the since-close Missouri State Penitentiary pleaded not guilty Monday in the pickax killing of another prisoner, a slaying prosecutors contend was part of a botched escape plan.
Shannon Phillips is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Toby Viles, who was found dead Oct. 22, 2003, in the prison ice plant. Viles had been working there without direct supervision with Phillips and another inmate, Chris Sims. All three are convicted murderers.
Phillips and Sims were missing for nearly four days before authorities found them hiding in a stairwell near where Viles' body was found. Prosecutors have yet to charge Sims.
No trial date was set, but Cole County Circuit Judge Thomas Brown told attorneys to return Aug. 1 to determine when the case can go to trial.
At a court hearing last month, a videotaped statement by Shannon Phillips was shown in which he acknowledged masterminded the slaying of Viles as part of an escape plan.
