Stephenson County (Ill.) correctional officers and sheriff's deputies on Sunday responded to a hostage situation at the county jail involving a federal inmate who took another inmate hostage, according to Lt. Richard Roodhouse with the sheriff's office. The perpetrator was apprehended by authorities, and no one was injured in the incident, which occurred at about 7:08 a.m. Sunday at the county jail. At that time, a federal inmate from Chicago, George Washington Sr., 27, allegedly took another inmate hostage in an area of G Block at the jail using a sharpened toothbrush. It is not exactly clear why Washington did this, but he made demands to authorities that he didn't want to stay at the county jail, Roodhouse said. Correctional officers, sheriff's deputies and members of the Freeport Police Department responded to the situation. Freeport Deputy Police Chief Robert Smith said police were on standby at the scene in case the situation escalated. Washington was allegedly holding the sharpened toothbrush to the other inmate's throat. Authorities are not identifying the inmate who was taken hostage, except to say he was a local prisoner, not a federal inmate. Officials say another federal inmate talked to Washington during the incident and convinced him to drop the weapon. Washington was then taken into custody. Officials say the entire incident lasted anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes. Washington was initially charged with unlawful restraint for this incident, but that charge was elevated to aggravated assault, a Class A misdemeanor, by the Stephenson County State's Attorney's Office. |
