| For guards, some county lockups pay more than prisons |

AUSTIN – Jailers in the state’s five largest counties are paid better on average than officers at the Texas Department of Corrections, a deficit that has the potential to drain still more workers from the depleted prison workforce. Jail employees in Tarrant, Dallas, Bexar, Travis and Harris counties make an average of $4,223 more a year than state corrections workers, according to a study by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, said Lance Lowry, president of the Huntsville-based local that represents corrections workers. “Which means the competition isn’t just from oil fields but from the county level, which is not normally on par with the state,” Lowry said.
