| Portage County studies need for new jail |

STEVENS POINT – Portage County leaders are updating their information to determine if the county needs a new jail. The current facility, which was built in the 1990s for about $5 million, does not meet Wisconsin Department of Corrections standards. It also presents challenges for jail staff and is inefficient, said Don Jankowski, a County Board member and chairman of the Space and Properties Committee. Remodeling the facility to bring it in line with state code would cost about $10 million to $13 million. Portage County is working with Venture Architects in Milwaukee, the same architectural firm that previously studied the jail, to determine the best path for the future.
