A Columbia County (N.Y.) jury has found Mortimer Stimers, a county jail correction officer, not guilty on all four counts sexual abuse and three of official misconduct. The jury of six women and six men returned the not-guilty verdict Friday afternoon, December 3, after deliberating for just over two hours. The case against a second correction officer originally charged, Michael Wheeler, was dismissed by Judge Paul Czajka in September for lack of evidence. Although cleared of all charges, Mr. Wheeler is still awaiting the disciplinary hearing that must be conducted by the Sheriff's Office before he can return to his job as a correction officer at the jail in Greenport. A third correction officer was initially implicated but never charged. The case stemmed from charges made by three young women inmates at the jail, who accused Mr. Stimers of sexually abusing them between February 6 and December 13, 2003. |
