| SC prison savings could mean more money for probation agency |

COLUMBIA — The state’s probation and parole agency says it deserves at least $2.2 million more next year to help keep nonviolent offenders out of prisons. The agency says it needs the money because more S.C. offenders are being given probation, instead of jail terms. That is saving the state money, a state panel was told Thursday. The drop in the number of prison inmates has allowed the state Corrections Department to close two prisons, Corrections officials told the state Sentencing Reform Oversight Committee. That committee will decide in October whether part of Corrections’ savings – $2.2 million – now should go to Probation, Parole and Pardon Services. Read More. |
