Oklahoma execution protocols, death chamber changes are expected by October |

ENID — Both the state’s new execution protocol and the renovated death chamber at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary should be unveiled in the first weeks of October, state Corrections Department Director Robert Patton said Thursday. Since the release of a state Public Safety Department investigation into the bungled execution of Clayton Derrell Lockett, the state Corrections Department has been making revisions to the state’s execution protocol. The investigation found current policy failed to train execution team staff adequately and lacked contingency plans for staff when an execution goes awry, as Lockett’s did in April. Gov. Mary Fallin called for the investigation after Lockett writhed, grimaced, and mumbled on the gurney before corrections officials closed the blinds and escorted media witnesses out of the death chamber.
