Cell phones creeping into Virginia prisons

STAUNTON – Facing the possibility of being slapped with additional time in prison, perhaps as much as five years, Clarence McCary Jr. tried in vain during a recent court appearance to deflect his involvement in a crime committed behind bars at Augusta Correctional Center in Craigsville.

As his main and only witness, he even brought in a Virginia Beach man who is serving time for first-degree murder.

McCary’s transgression wasn’t the crime of the century, but it is a growing problem within the Virginia Department of Corrections – prisoners using smuggled cell phones.
