WASHINGTON — Arkansas Assistant Attorney General David Curran will appear before the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday to defend a state corrections department ban on inmate beards that is being challenged as a violation of religious freedom. Gregory H. Holt, an inmate at Varner Supermax prison in Gould, claims the ban on beards infringes on his right under the U.S. Constitution to freely practice his religion. As a practicing Muslim, Holt says he believes he is required not to shave his beard. The Arkansas Department of Correction does not allow beards as a safety precaution. They claim that inmates can use a beard to hide contraband or, in cases of escape, can shave a beard to rapidly change their appearance to evade detection. Inmates with certain medical conditions are allowed to grow a beard but no longer than one-quarter-inch long. Read More. |
