| Study: Downtown jail can be fixed, but consolidating at satellite would save money |

URBANA — A preliminary study of Champaign County's correctional needs says the 34-year-old downtown jail can be remodeled and made more usable, but there would almost certainly be savings in staffing and other areas by consolidating all services to the newer satellite jail in east Urbana. The county board's facilities committee is scheduled to discuss the preliminary findings when it meets at 6 p.m. today at the Brookens Center in Urbana. The committee will review what is called a progress update on a sheriff's operations master plan, being performed by a consortium of firms that's led by Gorski Reifsteck Architects of Champaign.
