| Police recapture inmate who escaped from prison |

Police say they recaptured a 23-year-old inmate Monday afternoon in Weathersfield, eight hours after he cut through a fence and escaped from the Southeast State Correctional Facility in Windsor. Anthony Fitzgerald was serving a sentence of 3½ to 10 years for lewd and lascivious conduct with a minor, according to Lisa Menard, deputy commissioner for the state Corrections Department. Vermont State Police Capt. Ray Keefe said Fitzgerald was spotted walking on Trasher Road in Weathersfield by two people working in a farm field. They recognized Fitzgerald from news reports and called 911. "They thought he fit the picture, so they called," Keefe said. "A trooper was right in the area and was able to confirm who he was. This was clearly not a well-thought-out escape." Keefe said he understood Fitzgerald used clippers to cut through the prison fence. The Windsor prison is a former prison work farm, and Keefe said the clippers were assigned to Fitzgerald to perform a task on the site. Read More. |
