A gang member is serving nine months in jail after hitting a corrections officer during a fight in the Grant County Jail.

A Grant County jury convicted Marcos Avalos-Barrera, a 24-year-old man, in September of custodial assault and assault in the fourth.

Avalos-Barrera has previous felony convictions for:
  • Riot while armed in 2012
  • Felony harassment in 2010
  • Malicious mischief in the second degree in 2010
  • Assault in the third degree in 2005
He faced between nine months and a year in jail, according to state sentencing laws. Grant County Superior Court Judge John Knodell sentenced Avalos-Barrera to nine months in jail.

Two corrections officers were escorting an inmate to the visitor’s area on May 7 while Avalos-Barrera was walking around the lower floor of the dorm. When the officers and the inmate reached the bottom of the stairs, Avalos-Barrera ran at the other inmate, according to the prosecutor’s office.
