Six indicted in jailbreak bid

An Albemarle County (Va.) grand jury last Monday indicted six men accused of taking part in a violent attempted jailbreak that left one corrections officer with broken backbones.
Victor Alfonso Becerra, 20, Thomas Clayton Dudley, 22, Antinne Anderson, 26, and Michael Anthony Carpenter, 28, are each charged with two counts of abduction of a correctional officer, two counts of assault and battery of a correctional officer and one count of attempted escape.
Christopher O'Brien Cobourne, 26, is charged with aiding the abduction of a correctional officer and Timothy Wayne Mawyer was indicted on one count of abduction and one count of assault and battery.
All six of the defendants will be tried at one trial, set for Circuit Court on March 15 and 16.
Two officers were assaulted and taken hostage in the attempted jailbreak Aug. 14 at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail. Harold Terry, a 74-year-old corrections officer, suffered broken bones in his back after being ambushed on the jail's West Side.
Officer Joseph Woodson has said he came looking for Terry when he was grabbed from behind and knocked unconscious against some bars. Later, he said, inmates held an ink pen to his throat to keep other officers at bay.
The rampaging inmates, authorities have said, busted windows in the attempt, but were prevented from crawling to freedom by iron bars. The inmates eventually released the wounded Terry, and opened the cells to dozens of other inmates in the cellblock, authorities said.
The released inmates did not help the would-be escapees. Six of them are credited with helping police, and three men freed Woodson from his captors.
