| Department of Corrections opens up on jail issue |

For several month Scioto County Officials have have been seeking answers about Lawrence County proposing to move their jail to a facility in Franklin Furnace. Lawrence County has announced their intentions, with the cooperation of the state, to lease the Liberation Unit of the former Ohio River Valley (ORV) Juvenile Correctional Facility in Scioto County. The lease is anticipated to be 15 years for a cost of one dollar a year. Various Scioto County officials have expressed concern over this plan for a number of reasons. Some of those reasons include the possibility of Lawrence County renting out beds to other counties for additional revenue. As a part of a possible move the Ohio legislature gave the Lawrence County Sheriff and Prosecutor jurisdiction over the Liberation Unit. There is concern because the state has not permitted one county to open a jail in another county. With these concerns and various others, Scioto County has hired outside legal council to look at the possibility of challenging the law that gave Lawrence County jurisdiction over the facility.
