| State cuts to delay opening of Culpeper's women's prison indefinitely |

Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s announcement Wednesday to cut 565 jobs — mainly Department of Corrections employees — to eliminate the revenue shortfall in the state’s two-year budget will also delay the opening of the Culpeper Correctional Center for Women, which recently served as Culpeper’s Juvenile Correctional Center at Coffeewood. Delegate Ed Scott, R-Madison said this decision will affect 119 local positions and that officials could delay the opening of the facility indefinitely. “There will be some opportunities offered for relocation, but with the Department of Corrections closing four facilities in total and reducing its budget by $20.3 million, the job opportunities may be scarce,” Scott told the Star-Exponent Wednesday. “This is unfortunate as both this administration and the prior administration had stated previously that Virginia needs another facility for adult female offenders.” Read More. |
