Five male officers at Ohio's only juvenile prison for girls have been indicted on charges of assault and molestation of prisoners, and officials said last Wednesday a months-long investigation may result in more indictments. The charges, filed last Tuesday in Delaware County Common Pleas Court, in the county where the Scioto Correctional Facility is located, accuse the officers of assault, sexual molestation and dereliction of duty. The indictments come less than a week after Gov. Bob Taft forced Geno Natalucci-Persichetti, director of the Department of Youth Services, to resign. His resignation and the indictments come amid widespread criticism and questioning of the department, which is being sued by four prisoners who claim they were assaulted and sexually abused at the prison, were given inadequate medical care and were denied access to legal representation. None of the indicted officers is now working at Scioto, which houses between 100 and 120 females ages 12 to 21 who were convicted of felonies. As of last month, seven girls from Hamilton and Butler counties were jailed at Scioto, which also houses boys before they are assigned to other prisons. A special grand jury convened in Delaware County in early October to examine conditions and allegations of abuse at Scioto and since has heard testimony from 45 witnesses, said Delaware County Prosecutor David Yost. The grand jury continues to meet. Yost said more indictments are possible. |
