| Haine calls on Quinn to deny clemency to convicted murderer |

The former state's attorney who oversaw Michael Strader's murder case in 1994 has called on Gov. Quinn to deny clemency, while the prosecutor who put Strader in prison continues to call for the sentence to be reduced. State Sen. Bill Haine, D-Alton, was the Madison County State's Attorney when Strader shot and killed his ex-girlfriend, 17-year-old Donnell Awalt, in front of her home in Worden. Strader also shot Matthew Pike, his former friend who had begun dating Donnell. Strader was originally offered a plea bargain of 50 years, but turned it down. He went to trial, and was found guilty of first-degree murder and attempted murder. His sentence was 90 years, of which he would have to serve 50 percent under the sentencing guidelines of the time.
