Inmates cut wood for needy, when not fighting fires |

Temperatures have been dropping in the High Country as we inch closer to winter, and for many, colder temperatures mean a struggle to stay warm. But now prison inmates are helping those facing that challenge. Splitting hundreds of cords of wood is a hard day's work, and the crew doesn't get to go home when it's done. As inmates of the Arizona Department of Correction prison in Winslow, they're volunteering, splitting wood and loading it for veterans who need assistance and the elderly. "This is something they enjoy," said corrections officer Sgt. John Righi, guarding the prisoners as they worked. "They've made a mistake in society and this is a way for them to pay it back."
