| Winnebago County: Ensure public safety; increase jail staffing |

We applaud the Winnebago County sheriff for weighing in on the long-term staffing shortage at the County Jail, and for recognizing the extraordinary efforts being demonstrated on a daily basis by those on the front lines ensuring public safety. Indeed, the stress and strain of understaffing exists across the entire Sheriff’s Department, including the 911 emergency responses Call Center. We continue to urge the sheriff and the Winnebago County Board to hire additional staff now. Doing so will certainly enhance the health and safety of jail detention staff, detainees, and the general public. Section 701.20, Title 20 of the Illinois Administrative Code on Jail Standards sets forth in relevant part, that each County Jail “must have sufficient personnel to provide adequate 24-hour supervision of detainees.” Read More. |
