MOUNT HOLLY >> The family of deceased Burlington County Jail inmate Jerome Iozzia has filed a $25 million lawsuit against the state of New Jersey, Pemberton Township Police, the Department of Corrections, the warden and medical personnel who were responsible for his care at the time his death.

“You have rights, even if you’re in jail: you have a right to be safe, you have a right to eat and you have a right to receive at least the minimal standards of medical care,” Robert Fuggi, the attorney representing Iozzia’s estate said. “But, it seems as though this prison operated like Guantanamo Bay and maybe even worse.”

Iozzia, 50, died in BCJ on Feb. 25. His death is one of two recent Burlington County Jail deaths that have brought attention to the poor quality of healthcare and unsanitary conditions inside the facility.
