Luzerne County prison budgets $547,500 for outside housing due to overcrowding

Luzerne County’s proposed 2015 budget includes $547,500 to house inmates in outside prisons due to overcrowding — an expense that hasn’t been necessary since 2009.

“Based on current trends, I don’t believe we can avoid the need to house out some inmates,” said county Correctional Services Division Head J. Allen Nesbitt.

Nesbitt warned council members in July he may be forced to request the additional expense because the main prison on Water Street in Wilkes-Barre has been consistently filled to capacity this year.
