Beyond bricks and mortar: Effort begins to look at what a new detention center needs

The cost to build a high-security jail cell for someone who represents a threat is $70,000.

A cell for two people who require a medium-security setting is between $52,000 and $55,000.

Minimum security, which would mean a cell for four people, carries a cost of between $32,000 and $35,000.

And there are other expenses that will figure into the cost that includes staffing for a new detention center that will continue as long as the facility is in use.
