A contagious infection of the skin known as "scabies" has been found in the Houston County (Ala.) Jail. The infection is generally spread with people having close contact with each other. Sheriff Lamar Glover said the itch mite was discovered in the jail Dec. 3 when medical personnel diagnosed two inmates with the infection. He said when it was found -- inmates had showers, pods and restrooms steamed cleaned and decontaminated. Bed linens also were removed from bunks and washed. Glover said all paper items belonging to inmates were bagged and fumigated and he ordered all outside items brought into the jail must be new and prepackaged. Unsealed items are banned. Every inmate is being examined and so far 34 have been quarantined out of 395 inmates housed in the facility. Inmates are being treated with prescription drugs and will be treated a second time in seven days. The sheriff also said new inmates will be treated before entering the jail. |
