Prison corrections officers claim state fails to report serious assaults |

OTISVILLE, N.Y. – Inmate assaults on corrections officers are expected to reach a five-year high this year and have already increased by 11 percent over last year, officials of the New York State Corrections Officers Benevolent Association claimed on Wednesday. Standing outside the Otisville State Correctional Facility, union president Michael Powers, accompanied by state Sen. John Bonacic, and Assembly Members Aileen Gunther and James Skoufis, discussed what he said was a record-high report regarding inmate on correctional staff assaults for 2014. The Department of Corrections and Community Supervision says there were “zero” serious assaults this year, the union said. The union, though, claims the increase in assaults is in correlation to the closure of four prisons. They say the closures have created overcrowding in the prisons that creates an environment in which inmates become more agitated and more likely to commit acts of violence. For example, in 2010 there were 577 reported assaults on staff by inmates; if the monthly trend continues, this year those incidents will rise to an excess of 718, said Powers. Read More. |
