A former Chicago, Ill., police officer who spent nearly 14 years in prison before his convictions were overturned says he still suffers from the effects of prison beatings. Fifty-four-year-old Steven Manning said in court last week that an inmate beat him with a broomstick at the Cook County Jail. He says inmates also attacked him twice while in a Missouri prison. Manning was convicted of taking part in the 1984 kidnapping of two reputed Kansas City drug traffickers. Then, he went to death row in the 1990 murder of a suburban Chicago trucking firm owner. The Illinois Supreme Court reversed that conviction in 2000. Manning was released from jail this year after an appeal in the Missouri case. Manning claims FBI agents and a jailhouse informant made up evidence against him. He's seeking millions of dollars in damages. |
