| California prisons can no longer separate races after riots |

California prison officials will have to balance safety concerns with the need to avoid racial stereotypes after the state agreed to end a long-standing policy that had been challenged in court and deemed unconstitutional by the U.S. Department of Justice. Under a court settlement made public Oct. 22, the state will drop its practice of attempting to prevent further violence by segregating inmates by race after riots involving racially based prison gangs.
