| Angola nurse arrested for sex with inmate |

West Feliciana Parish, La., sheriff's deputies have booked a nurse at the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola suspected of having sexual relations with an inmate. Ranita Tompkins, 38, of Bunkie, was booked with malfeasance in office and sexual conduct prohibited with persons confined in correctional institutions. She is free on $10,000 bond. Angola Warden Burl Cain said prison investigators obtained information that suggested inmate Robert Whitaker Jr., a trusty, was leaving a compound on the farm where the prison's bloodhounds and other dogs are kept. Investigators set up surveillance and saw Tompkins pick up Whitaker, who is serving a life sentence. When they stopped her car outside her home in the penitentiary's employee housing area, investigators found Whitaker inside the car. Cain said Tompkins was immediately placed on forced leave pending termination. He said another employee who was asleep in the house was put on leave as well pending an investigation into whether she was aware of her roommate's contact with Whitaker. |
