PHOENIX — Inmate fire crews from the Arizona Department of Corrections have responded to a total of 163 incidents such as fires, abatement and work projects in 2014, including the official fire season, which occurs from April through the end of October.

Inmates comprise a total of 11 crews at eight Arizona prison complexes statewide: Douglas, Florence, Lewis (Buckeye), Perryville (female crew), Safford, Tucson, Winslow and Yuma. They are assigned through the Arizona State Forestry Division.

Crews consist of 15 to 20 inmates, all of whom are minimum custody inmates serving sentences for non-violent offenses. Additionally, each crew is overseen by uniformed Department of Corrections and State Forestry personnel, who also work as part of the fire crew.
