Hiring more managers won’t keep officers safe

Recently it has been reported in many media outlets that New York State correction officers are bringing forth an awareness of a high rate of assaults to staff at the hand of inmates in many correctional facilities across the state. This fact is not in dispute, and even the State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision recognizes this fact.

What I find appalling and shocking to the senses is the response by DOCCS. Its response is to hire more highly paid executives within the department. How is that effective? So let me get this right; the state will keep closing posts and have fewer security staff, but hire more management staff? We have seen, as reported in the Albany Times Union, that DOCCS is ripe with questionable executive staff and that this agency has been “plagued by extramarital affairs, questionable off-duty conduct by employees and a culture where female employees may have felt pressured into intimate relationships in order to gain promotions.”
