One corrections officer was hospitalized overnight Sunday in the wake of an inmate attack that injured him and three other officers. Three of the officers sustained concussions in a fight with two inmates. One officer required five stitches in the back of his head. Another had four stitches to his mouth. And another suffered from bruises. "It is the violent nature of the corrections world. One minute it is quiet. The next four people are assaulted," said Richard Harcrow, president of the New York State Correction Officers and Police Benevolent Association, the union that represents correction staff at state prisons. Greenhaven is a maximum security prison in Dutchess County, N.Y. The fight began when one inmate resisted being frisked by an officer. The inmate attacked the officer. A second inmate grabbed the officer's billy club and attacked, according to the union. More officers were attacked when they tried to help. One of them is a sergeant, Harcrow said. Jim Flateau, a spokesman for the state Department of Correctional Services, said the two inmates are now locked in disciplinary housing. Commissioner Glenn Goord will seek departmental charges against the inmates. He will also seek criminal charges in the assault. The inmates were not injured. Greenhaven had 2,079 inmates as of yesterday. Last year, it had 37 assaults on staff. Through November of this year, there had been 25 assaults, Flateau said. |
