| 911 and Jail Workers Protest in Downtown Rockford |

ROCKFORD -- Winnebago County Corrections and 911 Emergency Dispatch workers will demonstrate outside the county jail at 6:30pm tonight. The union workers represented by AFSCME say both the jail and 911 dispatch center are understaffed, and say their concerns regarding working conditions have been largely ignored. In a news release, union officials say, "Detainees at the Winnebago County Jail are frequently on "lock down" for up to twenty-three (23) hours a day, causing additional stress on the security of the correctional facility. Information recently released to the Union by the Sheriff's Department, via a Freedom of Information request, demonstrates that the Jail was on 'lock down" nine hundred and eighty one (981) times during the last five years-the reason cited by the County being inadequate staffing." They say that frequent callbacks to work, and forced overtime at the 911 Call Center, are also making it difficult for these workers to do their jobs. Read More. |
