| Six candidates for Escambia corrections director |

The pool of applicants for Escambia County's highest corrections position has been narrowed down to half a dozen applicants. Seventeen people applied to replace current Director of Corrections Gordon Pike, who is retiring this month. Monday morning, a five-person committee met at the county administration building in Pensacola to review resumes and start whittling down the list. After about an hour of discussion. the committee wound up picking three local candidates and three national applicants to continue to the interview phase later this month. "This is going to be one of my highest priority hires," County Administrator Jack Brown said during the committee meeting. "This is a very big issue, and it's going to be a challenge to find someone with the skill sets we're looking for." The director of corrections oversees the budgeting and administrative functions of the jail and community control programs such as probation and work release. In addition to those regular duties, the incoming director will be tasked with securing permanent housing for hundreds of inmates who were displaced by a natural gas explosion at the main jail in April. Another issue will be correcting understaffing and policy concerns raised during a year-long Department of Justice investigation of the main jail. Read More. |
