Corrections Dept. needs to change course

I was placed on the state subcommittee on prisons by my dear friend Sen. Creigh Deeds, D-Millboro, for he knew that I would not sit at the meetings and not speak my mind. Hopefully the governor will make some changes at the Department of Corrections before it's too little, too late.

All major prisons in Virginia are short of correctional officers. The DOC put out a memo on June 5, 2014: no communication to the governor's office, secretariat and elected officials without first discussing these issues with the director's office. I call this a gag order on employees.

I am a retired correctional officer with local experience. I've had to work at two other prisons after riots — Powhatan and Mecklenberg. I've seen firsthand how poorly staff and inmates were treated.

The DOC is given enough money to fill all positions. The taxpayer has spent millions on study after study on just how many positions are needed for you to have enough staff to fill posts. The DOC is not filling funded postitions. It it putting all staff in a very unsafe work place. They are placing the staff and inmates in danger and stealing from the taxpayer.
