Shocking accusations of mentally ill prisoners being abused inside South Carolina's Department of Corrections. The accusations are coming to light in a lawsuit filed 10 years ago by the Protection and advocacy for people with disabilities or “PANDA.” It was filed on behalf of the more than 2500 people suffering from mental illness in prison, and is now in mediation. Among the accusations in the 2005 lawsuit, abusive activities Gloria Prevost, Executive Director, PANDA, “In one case there was one person with self injurious behavior, and he had cut himself across his stomach and it was really really bad, rather than going straight to the ER, there was a message made to him, let's put you in a restraint chair, and so you see him being forcibly fighting to be restrained.” Not enough staff, not enough counselors, and inadequate training for those counselors to handle mental illness.
