Eleven Ohio inmates have committed suicide in 2004, a record for the state. Authorities say two inmates committed suicide in a 24-hour period this week, increasing the total to eleven inmate suicides this year. Officials say the eleven suicides surpasses the previous record of ten, last set in 1999. The most recent death was at the Ross Correctional Institution in Chillicothe, where Stephen Powers, 34, was found dead Wednesday. He was serving a ten-year sentence for manslaughter. On Tuesday, Gregory Lee, 26, was found hanging at the London Correctional Institution. He was sentenced to nine years in prison in 2002 for burglary. Ohio prisons chief Reginald A. Wilkinson already has hired a consultant to look at the problem and told each prison to set up review teams. |
