Two months after his release from prison and on his 61st day staying at a Springfield parolee transitional home, Clarence Hopson was planning his next step. The 32-year-old Hopson, who served about three years in prison on drug charges, is among the thousands of former prisoners paroled by the Illinois Department of Corrections annually. While most parolees emerge from prison to live with a family member, friend or clergy member in the community, some of them, like Hopson, spend the months after their release in a group home.
