| Report tackles prison issues |

A recent report suggests the state of Florida can better run its correctional facilities by allowing more oversight of prisons, using data to better inform decisions and cultivating a culture of professionalism amongst correctional offices. The Project on Accountable Justice, a collaboration between Florida State University, Tallahassee Community College, St. Petersburg College and Baylor University, released Thursday a detailed report on five ways the Florida Department of Corrections can improve its operations that will have lasting impressions not only in Florida’s prisons and juvenile detention centers but on Florida as a whole. The report comes after dozens of correctional officer firings and allegations of abuse. In August, six officers at a state prison in Chipley were arrested and fired following a violent inmate takedown. According to PAJ, the corrections department employs 1 in 7 state employees, the most out of any agency, operates on a $2.3 billion annual budget, and houses more than 100,000 inmates. Read More. |
