There's been a shake-up inside a Matagorda County jail. Three jailers were abruptly fired and an investigation is now underway after several inmates accused a jailer of inappropriate touching. The three female inmates say a male jailer fondled all three of them. The women claim they were molested at the Matagorda County jail the last weekend of November. Sheriff James Mitchell says three jailers pulled a prank on jail volunteer, telling female inmates to put on a "show" for the younger man. Sheriff Mitchell says five to six of the women stripped and while nude or partially nude, made lewd comments to the volunteer. That's when the women say one of the paid jailers fondled them. The sheriff says no criminal charges have been filed, but he has terminated all three jailers for pushing the inmates to take off their clothes and harass the volunteer in the first place. "I take it very seriously, obviously," said Sheriff Mitchell. "I don't allow my inmates to be harassed in any way. I don't allow them to be mistreated. At the same time, I don't allow that from my employees either. I take this very seriously. I feel like I've taken the proper actions. I've terminated these three men. I think that's a pretty powerful statement." An attorney hired to represent the three inmates says there are crimes at the prison. Attorney Clark Woodson says Sheriff Mitchell is trying to downplay the fact that there have been allegations of touching and allegations of an assault. What's more, Woodson says the jailer offered the women special privileges for their sexual favors. |
