| Prison audit raises questions on solitary confinement |

A state performance audit of the Department of Correctional Services released Monday recommended a review of how solitary confinement is used and an update of the data collection system. Both of these recommendations should be addressed by the corrections department because of the seriousness of the issues. The report was done by the Legislature’s Performance Audit Committee. In solitary confinement, inmates are restricted to an individual cell for 23 hours a day. One hour is allowed in a caged enclosure, referred to as a “dog run.” Inmates are placed in solitary for misbehavior, their own protection or because of gang activity. Read More. |
