| Alleged inmate homicide under investigation at Menard |

The Illinois Department of Corrections is investigating the Nov. 19 death of a 34-year-old inmate state officials allege was killed by his cellmate while both were in segregation at Menard Correctional Center. Bernard Simmons, 34, was found unresponsive and laying on the floor of the cell the two shared. Life-saving efforts were unsuccessful, said IDOC spokesman Tom Shaer. IDOC did not release the name of the suspect, also a 34-year-old male, pending results of the investigation. The state also has not released the manner of death or whether a weapon was used, and Shaer said he could not disclose the reasons the two were segregated from the general prison population.
