A New Mexico inmate “buried alive” in solitary confinement for seven years is being denied showers, exercise and proper medical care, according to a federal lawsuit. In a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Albuquerque against New Mexico Department of Corrections Secretary Gregg Marcantel and other staffers, a lawyer for Justin Hinzo says the 39-year-old prisoner is trapped in windowless cell at the Penitentiary of New Mexico near Santa Fe and is deteriorating mentally because of the conditions. The lawsuit claims that those conditions and neglect left Hinzo with post-traumatic stress disorder and that he “has been permanently damaged by the infliction of long-term solitary confinement.” Read More. |
