Local woman, vet aid kids of incarcerated parents

Some children of incarcerated parents will get a Christmas surprise this year thanks to the efforts of a local woman and a Norman veterinarian.

The Oklahoma Messages Project, headed by Cheri Fuller, a local resident who is a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Edmond, consists of individuals who care deeply about the affects of incarcerated parents on their children. Several volunteers are fellow First Presbyterian members.

Since 1990, Friends for Folks has been training dogs at the DOC’s Lexington Assessment and Reception Center in Lexington for placement with senior citizens, handicapped individuals and private individuals, said Oklahoma Department of Corrections spokesman Jerry Massie. Norman veterinarian John Otto donates basic care and animal health instruction for dog trainers as needed, Massie said.
