| Corrections Chief to focus on safety, preparing inmates for workforce |

Bryan Stirling, head of the South Carolina Department of Corrections, said he will stay on the job during Gov. Nikki Haley's second term, aiming to reduce recidivism among inmates and help them prepare to find jobs after they are released from prison. After he was appointed by Haley last year, Stirling said his top priorities were corrections officer safety and "life lessons" for inmates to help them find jobs once they leave prison. In a telephone interview this week, Stirling told The Greenville News the safety of his staff remains a priority through a "hand-in-glove" approach. "Making sure that these inmates are in class and in programs and learning life skills and getting the rehabilitation that they need and working while they're here makes the institution safer," he said.
