An Alexandria man was formally indicted Monday on a first-degree murder charge in the slaying of a D.C. corrections official this year, authorities said. The one-count indictment against 29-year-old Dawit Seyoum was mostly a procedural step; an Alexandria General District Court judge had certified the case last week to be presented to a grand jury. Seyoum is accused of attacking and killing Carolyn Cross, the 64-year-old deputy director of corrections in the District, after she walked into her Alexandria apartment one day in September. The killing was a startling one: Authorities have said Seyoum and Cross were strangers to each other, and the 29-year-old left the corrections official inside her home with a plastic bag taped over her head. Cross’s daughter discovered the body after she went to her mother’s home to give her a ride to the airport, authorities have said.
