Ocean County Jail Warden Theodore J. Hutler Jr. has gone rogue. A few weeks from retirement, Hutler, 64, has publicly admonished his bosses on the Board of Freeholders. The longtime warden has circulated a letter he has penned to them in which he states that his own department is unnecessarily costing taxpayers money. Hutler strongly recommends that his Department of Corrections be folded back into the Ocean County Sheriff's Office and placed under the authority of a sworn law enforcement officer. "As the longest tenured county jail warden in the history of the state, I strongly believe that the jail should return to its historic roots as part of the Sheriff's Department," Hutler wrote in an open letter to Freeholder Director Joseph H. Vicari, which was dated Nov. 24. "A merger of the two departments would result in a saving(s) of minimally one to two million dollars for the taxpayers of Ocean County." Read More. |
