Northampton County Council approves new director of corrections

Although Northampton County Council members agreed that Daniel Keen appeared qualified to become the county's next director of corrections, his approval turned into a party line vote Thursday night.

Democrats Lamont McClure, Scott Parsons and Robert Werner voted against Keen's nomination after a motion to table the matter failed in a 3-5 vote. Council had just two days to vet Keen, they said, and it wasn't enough time to entrust him with a $29 million department.

Instead, council Republicans placed their trust in Executive John Brown, who said Keen had the attitude and skill set needed to restore the prison system. The administration is considering shaking up how the prison is administrated, and Keen should be the person leading the way, Brown said.

"Our job was to find the best candidate that we could that is willing to take the helm of one of the most difficult institutions the county has to operate," Brown said.

Keen said after Thursday's meeting that he has no immediate changes in mind for when he takes over as director in January. While council members noted he found ways to reduce overtime and overcrowding in Franklin County, Keen said he needed to address basics first.
